Three blogs in Librarianship

ACRLog  http://acrlog.org/
Designing Better Libraries: http://dbl.lishost.org/blog/
Stephen’s Lighthouse http://stephenslighthouse.com/

ACRLog  http://acrlog.org/

I like the ACRLog because it pertains directly to my work.  As the tagline says “Blogging by and for academic and research librarians.”  The blog is meant to cover all the issues facing academic librarians.  I’m still relatively new to academic librarianship, so this blog really helps me keep up.  The blog is also under the umbrella of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association. The blog has five primary authors. The blog has categories, so I can easily go back to topics of special interest, such as “Information Literacy” or “Technology Issues.”  The Blogroll widget lists other library related blogs of interest.  I rely on this blog as much as any professional publication.  This blog allows comments, which are moderated.  This blog is successful because of the content.

Designing Better Libraries: http://dbl.lishost.org/blog/

Designing Better Libraries is a blog I read to get me thinking outside the box.  The blog focuses on design issues, but this is not restricted to space and furniture.  The blog authors (six influential people in the library world) urge readers to apply design thinking to other arenas of librarianship.  Topics also include instructional design, innovation, technology design, and the application of new media to design. One big focus is User Experience (UX) or what does the patron experience when he or she interacts with the library? This blog lets readers comment (one must register), and there are categories, archives, and a “Design and UX Feeds” bundle. This blog really makes me consider how libraries serve patrons, either in person or online. This blog allows comments, which are moderated.  Like the blog above, this blog is successful because of the content.

Stephen’s Lighthouse http://stephenslighthouse.com/

This is a personal blog, but it is very influential.  Stephen Abrams focuses on library innovation, technology, and larger trends that impact all libraries, academic, public, corporate, etc.  Abrams also looks beyond the library world.  He always showcases the latest Pew Internet & American Life Project's or EDUCAUSE reports, providing food for thought.  This blog relies on YouTube and graphics to illustrate points.  Sometimes, that is all a blog posting consists of, but that can be enough.   Abrams posts several times a day.  Like with other blogs, the archives and categories are helpful.  Abrams is sought after speaker in the library world, and it is handy to see his past presentations.
