PART 1 - Find three blogs in your current job and/or anticipated career field. (Two ways to search blog, if you haven't done so before is to use: Google Blog Search and Technorati). You can search for Blogs or Posts about a particular topic.
On the class wiki:
- list the name and URL of the blogs
- describe "how" each of these blogs are being used and what makes these blogs "successful" or "work"
- indicate if the blog was a moderated blog or not
Busby Jack
Evans, Traci
Fields, Xan
Hardy, Anthony
Hill, Patricia
Jones, Joy - Part 1
Mealer, Crystal - 3 Library Blogs
Miller, Tracy (Parts 1 and 2)
Morgan, Pamela
Nichols, Adam CSM 570 Blogs
Outlaw, Veronica - Part 1
Stazel, David
Trosclair, Kevin
Watson,Stephanie
Williams, Christopher
PART 2 - Set up a blog based on a topic/theme in your current or anticipated career field using WordPress. If you would like to use another blog program, please get approval for your instructor. Select and use a template that is appropriate for your theme and audience. Add at least two widgets to your blog. Review blog rubric for this blog assignment. Note each element that will be graded such as hyperlinks, citations, graphics and multimedia, etc. Also review the peer-review blog evaluation. The CSM 564 and 566 students use this form to evaluate your blogs and you will also evaluate each other’s blogs using this form. So take a look at each component.
On the class wiki, please provide:
- your topic/theme for your blog
- anticipated audience
- blog used
- list the widget(s) you are going to use and explain why you chose them for your blog
- theme used
- provide your thoughts/reactions (on the class wiki) about using a moderated blog versus an invited reader blog. (This is done after week 7). Notice this part of the assignment is AFTER week 7. CM

I feel like I have been disregarding a useful resource. The only blogs I really keep up with are for Crossfit and Paleo (recipes).

I added a "Part 2" section to this page. That way, our commentaries about the 3 blogs we locate and analyze can be on one page, and the information we post about our own personal blogs can be on a second page. What do y'all think?

I've found several really interesting blogs I didn't even know about (and here I was, thinking I was keeping on top of things). Wow. Will be posting tomorrow evening.

That is what I did, but don't really know how we were supposed to do it.

I'm a bit perplexed by the wordpress invite process. Since I normally use worpdress.org it works differently I guess. But when each of you invite me, I click it and it wants me to start a new site, I have tried signing in before, and it still is weird. So I created a wordpress.com site just for you all to invite me it is consultantforyou.wordpress.com try inviting me that way and see how that works.

An email went out to Dr. Mac about this. It seems we are all having that issue. That's why the body of the wiki page was changed so that we could easily post or URL for easy access.
Stephanie Watson said
at 5:03 pm on Feb 28, 2011
I may have figured out the issue. If you all are clicking "private" where you can invite only 35 viewers, then you have to know everyone's user names to add them to your blog. If you open your site up to everyone, then the invites you're sending will work better. But he form above is a good idea too, however, unless you invite by "user name" people to a private blog it won't work.

I can't remember who has access to a webinar software, but if we figure it out, I'd be willing to do a Q & A about Wordpress.com for an hour or two. We need the conference ability to share the screen. I could do it anytime, just let me know. I'm getting better, still barely a voice, and my daughter is sick now but I think we need to do this since time is short.

What are we doing on this page?? Am I the only one who is confused? I thought Part 1 was about the 3 blogs that we found and described, and Part 2 was where we list our own blog. People seem to be putting their own blog in the chart in Part 1 AND in Part 2.
I'm also confused about inviting people and about viewing blogs that I've been invited to - but I think we're all struggling with that. Plus, weren't we going to be given a list of people to invite (from undergrad classes)?
HELP?

I agree with your comment about Parts 1 & 2. On the table at the top of this page it appears to me that we were creating links to our own page. And on our page we were going to be responding to Parts 1 & 2. It looks like the second table is redundant. Maybe it should be removed. I guess we can wait to hear from the rest of the class.
I, too, was confused by the WordPress functionality. Ultimately I was able to figure out that the ‘Add User from Community’ function isn’t the correct way to do the invitations. That function resides on the Invites screen. Here is how I did my invitations: from the Dashboard, select Users from the menu on the left side of the screen. On the Users dropdown select Invites from the options. From this screen the invitation process is quite simple. Hope this helps.

David,
I'm sending you an invitation to my WordPress blog (using the technique you describe) so that you can see what happens. I received your invitation (and several others) but I am always directed to a screen that asks me to create a blog. At least that's what happens when I click on the email link. If I enter your blog address and go directly to that page, I am given a message that your blog is private - open only to invited users. This happens even if I am already logged on to WordPress.
Crystal Mealer said
at 6:41 pm on Mar 1, 2011
Let me know what happens when you get my invitation... Thanks.
davestazel said

Crystal,
When clicked on the link in your invitation it took me directly to your blog. I tried it once when I was already logged in and once when I was not logged in. Both times took me to the blog. The only difference is that when I was logged in I had access to the Dashboard. I assume that may be because I am a contributor.
Crystal Mealer said
at 8:58 am on Mar 2, 2011
Wow - this just gets more and more confusing. I changed my administrative email (on Wordpress) to ckmealer@crimson.ua.edu because that is the address that you sent my invitation to, but I still get directed to the "private blog" message when I try to access your blog. Do you think this might be a browser issue? I use Firefox
Crystal Mealer said
at 9:00 am on Mar 2, 2011
Follow up to note below: will you try sending the invite to "cmealer" which is my Wordpress user name and/or to "cmealer@gmail.com" which is the email address I originally used to sign up for Wordpress?
Thanks
Kevin Trosclair said

Yes and no. I invited under the Dashboard / Users / Invites way. My blog is set to private and (like others who saw the same problem) when I invited people the link on the email brought them to a page saying the blog is private and they need to be invited, or the other link brings them to a page to create a new blog. Tracy got it to work when she removed the private setting. I think that is what she said she did. The instructions said set up as public or invited reader. I assumed invited reader meant private. I will remove the private setting and see if it fixes the problem.

Hey everyone
One thing I realized is that we have to invite people using the email that they signed up with. So, if you signed up with something other than your crimson email (like a yahoo or gmail address) the invites may be weird because we generally only know each other's crimson address. If you are sending me a contributer invite please try both pamelajmorgan@yahoo.com and pmorgan@crimson.ua.edu. I tried to change the admin email but I'm not sure it has gone through
Crystal Mealer said
at 9:03 am on Mar 2, 2011
I changed my admin email (to my crimson email) but it didn't seem to help. My user name on WordPress is cmealer - can someone just invite me using only my user name? Also, Pam, I'm going to send invitations to both of your email addresses. Let us know what happens. Kevin, I can't find your original invite, but if you want to send it again, I'll let you know what happens.
Crystal Mealer said
at 9:12 am on Mar 2, 2011
Pamela,
I just sent invitations to both of your email addresses that you listed above, and both times I was given the message that the email address doesn't belong to a WordPress user and would I like to invite you to join, so I did. I also clicked the box for "Add user as a contributor to my blog" on both invitations. BTW, when I sent an invitation to dmstazel@crimson.ua.edu, David was able to view my blog immediately. When he invited me, though, I was not able to view his blog at all.
Crystal Mealer said
at 9:13 am on Mar 2, 2011
PS - Pamela, your yahoo address is showing up on my list of invitees but your crimson email address is not. Did you get both invitations?
davestazel said
at 8:34 pm on Mar 2, 2011
Crystal, that was probably due to you already being signed in under your gmail address and not your crimson address. I have resent the invite under gmail and that should fix it.
Crystal Mealer said
at 8:52 pm on Mar 2, 2011
Sorry, Dave. It didn't fix it. I think you have to add my email address under "Privacy" in "Settings." I also sent an email about this.
Kevin Trosclair said
at 12:35 pm on Mar 2, 2011
Ok. now that we have it figured out, I put a new page Wordpress Addresses on the wiki. I plan on using this address even after graduation so I created it under my gmail address. Can everyone list the email address used when creating the blog so there is less confusion and digging through comments/emails trying to find the right address to invite.
Crystal Mealer said
at 5:14 pm on Mar 2, 2011
Kevin, this is a great idea. I still have not been able to view anyone's blog - although I've been invited to a few. Will you re-invite me using cmealer@gmail.com and let me see if it will actually work? Thanks.

it's not fixable with this theme, that's how it looks. Most people know to click on the title to see how to comment on blogs, so just click on the title. It kind of cuts down on spam not to have it out there so it's a protection thing within the theme. :)
