Stazel - meta analysis review

Each of you please answer the following questions on the class wiki as indicated, although I want you to “talk/collaborate” with one another in the class as you answer these questions.

1.      What were the measures used in this study?

The study used objective and direct measures.  Examples of learning outcome measures included scores on standardized tests, scores on researcher-created assessments, grades/scores on teacher-created assessments (e.g., assignments, midterm/final exams), and grades or grade point averages. Examples of learning outcome measures for teacher learners (in addition to those accepted as student outcomes) included assessments of content knowledge, analysis of lesson plans or other materials related to the intervention, observation (or logs) of class activities, analysis of portfolios, or supervisor’s rating of job performance. Studies that used only nonlearning outcome measures (e.g., attitude, retention, attendance, level of learner/instructor satisfaction) were excluded.(p12)

2.      How did the researchers define “better”?

Although the report does not provide a clear definition of what the researchers meant when they used the term “better,”  the definition can be determined through the usage of the word.  The report states that “[t]he meta-analysis found that, on average, students in online learning conditions performed modestly better than those receiving face-to-face instruction.”  It goes on to explain that the performance differences were measured as the difference between treatment and control means, divided by the pooled standard deviation.

3.      How did the researchers define “performance?

Performance was not formally defined in the report.  But by analyzing the context, it appears that the term is used to describe the student’s test results.  The authors explained that performance was based on tests designed to evaluate how well the learning outcomes had been met.  This equates to some sort of measurable device, such as examinations, end of course tests, or standardized tests.
