Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning:

A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies

Topic1, Assignment1_DE_Rubric (Also used for Meta-Analysis Assignment)

1. What were the measures used in this study?

Some of the studies were conducted using K-12; most of the reports were taken from colleges and adult continuing education programs, including military and medical training.

Measures in the study included:

  • Scores on standardized tests
  • Scores on researcher-created assessments
  • Grades/scores on teacher-created assignments, midterm/final exams
  • Grades or grade point averages
  • Assessments of content knowledge
  • Analysis of lesson plans
  • Observation (or logs) of class activities
  • Analysis of portfolios

2. How did the researchers define “better”?

Due to the fact that additional learning time is invested in online learning including student collaboration and additional learning materials, online learning is “much more conducive to the expansion of learning time than is face-to-face instruction.”  Students are able to repeat material they find difficult.

3. How did the researchers define “performance"?

Positive performance is defined when the learners actively engaged and interacted with the subject material and/or with other learners.
